Make It Fit: Pattern Drafting & Hacking - 2 courses
Learn to draft and alter patterns for a better fit or to develop your own style. Great for aspiring fashion designers or home sewers who want to adapt patterns for better fit or to suit your style. You will build a manual of professional techniques to take with you.
Sewing Level: Masterclass. Students should have some basic garment sewing experience. You are encouraged to take one of our Intermediate or Advanced classes prior to or alongside these courses.
Includes: 12 weeks of instruction (2 courses) and handouts on all techniques. Supplies extra (link below).
In part 1 draft a custom skirt and bodice pattern to your body measurements. Take home a personal block for creating or adapting other patterns. In Part 2 discover how to create and adapt a pattern and make a pattern from a picture or your own design.
Part 1: The Skirt & Bodice Block (6 weeks)
how to take good body measurements and understanding the human form
drafting accurately, measuring, squaring, trueing, etc.
making a toile and adjusting fit on the body
transferring adjustments back to the working pattern
complete a personal skirt and bodice block in card
Part 2: Pattern Making and Adapting (6 weeks)
pre-requisite: part 1
learn best practices for getting a better fit
use your block to make pattern adaptations for bodices and skirts
learn to create different styles for sleeves, skirts, collars, etc.
draft a pattern from your block based on a chosen design
Note: There are limited spaces in this course so priority will be given to students who take both Parts 1 and 2.
This course runs on Wednesday evenings from 6:00-9:00pm. Part 1 starts on Feb 10. Part 2 starts on April 7. There is a 2-week break between parts 1 and 2.
Taught by Lois Sharpe. Lois started sewing in elementary school and has sewn everything from lingerie, wedding dresses, and tailored coats to home décor and upholstery. Lois' passion for sewing led to a career in the apparel industry in woman’s fashion and high end technical garments.
