Make It Fit: Pattern Drafting & Hacking Course

Learn to draft and alter patterns for a better fit or to develop your own style. Great for aspiring fashion designers or home sewers who want to adapt patterns for better fit or to suit your style. You will build a manual of professional techniques to take with you. 

Sewing Level: Advanced/Masterclass. Masterclasses develop professional level skills in garment making or quilting. Students are encouraged to take some of our Experienced Beginner or Advanced garment making classes prior to this class or have completed similar projects. Please contact us if you are unsure if you have the pre-requisite skills to join this class. Note: this is a technical class.

Includes: 12 weeks of instruction and handouts on all techniques. Supplies extra (link below).

In part 1 draft a custom skirt and bodice pattern to your body measurements. Take home a personal block for creating or adapting other patterns. In Part 2 discover how to create and adapt a pattern and make a pattern from a picture or your own design. 

Part 1: The Skirt & Bodice Block (6 weeks)

  • how to take good body measurements and understanding the human form
  • drafting accurately, measuring, squaring, trueing, etc.
  • making a toile and adjusting fit on the body
  • transferring adjustments back to the working pattern
  • complete a personal skirt and bodice block in card

    Part 2: Pattern Making and Adapting (6 weeks)

    • learn best practices for getting a better fit
    • use your block to make pattern adaptations for bodices and skirts
    • learn to create different styles for sleeves, skirts, collars, etc.
    • draft a pattern from your block based on a chosen design

    This course runs on Tuesday evenings from 6:00-9:00pm. Part 1 starts on Sept 13. Part 2 starts on Nov 1. There is a 1-week break between parts 1 and 2.

    Instructor: Jill Schuler has been teaching and sewing for over 20 years. She has a degree in costume and fashion design from Edinburgh University. She loves to sew her own clothes when she has time, but mostly they are for other people. Her favourite way to relax is with tea, cake, and a cosy fireplace.
